Kempton in a downward spiral says reader
"The deterioration of our town has excelled to a point where our council is overwhelmed by the enormity of the task on hand."
Editor – It is quite difficult to live in this town and pay rates and taxes with a happy heart. Our town is becoming one huge pile of rubble. The corner of Commissioner Street and Pascoe Avenue looks like a World War II movie scene. Highveld Road looks no better. We never see municipal teams fixing roads or cleaning parks or replacing manhole covers.
It’s like we have a non-existent council, except when we have to pay up and shut up. This same council is slowly squeezing the last bit of breath out of us.
The deterioration of our town has reached a point where our council will be overwhelmed by the enormity of the task at hand.
We seem to forget why we have a municipality. Municipalities were formed to render a service to the residents such as water, sewer, waste collection, upkeep of roads and so forth. Nowadays the focus has shifted to collecting monies to pay salaries to people who are not interested to do the jobs they have been employed for. The CBD is something we do not want to take note of or discuss. We have allowed street vendors to take over and rule.

The next growing problem is the number of homeless people living on the streets, urinating and defecating in plain sight. Are our council members blind, deaf, not coherent or just so busy with their own lives that they forget that they’ve been elected by the people to serve the people? Guys, it’s time you wake up and smell the pile of rubble we are living in.
Council members start doing their jobs. Don’t wait for the next person to take initiative. Be the person who stands up and action the items that need to be addressed. Just do it, gain the respect of your citizens and make it happen.
I’m not a concerned citizen anymore. I’ve been in Kempton Park for 60 years watching some wonderful growth but now also the downward spiral of deterioration. It’s time for me to move to a town where the council is concerned for its people.
