Bloody CBD guest room: Gauteng SAPS investigates delayed call to forensic experts

Questions remain if forensics were on the scene of the bloody CBD guest room on May 3.

“The provincial office of Gauteng SAPS has called for an urgent internal investigation to establish why the police officers who responded on May 3 did not immediately call the forensic experts.”

This statement was made by Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo in reply to follow-up inquiries sent yesterday about the bloody Kempton Park CBD guestroom discovered on May 3.

He contradicted the statement about a provincial investigation when he first told Express that police were alerted on May 3 and proceeded to the scene at about 11am when they cordoned off the room.

“Forensic experts collected samples that will be taken to the forensic laboratory to establish if it was indeed blood,” he said at the time. He also said Kempton Park SAPS had opened an inquest docket to be investigated.

Contradiction

Masondo’s comment to Express also contradicted the observations of the Express journalist and first responders who attended the scene where the blood was discovered. It was reported that the forensic investigators were yet to be summoned to the scene.

On the day of the discovery, Kempton SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, said that a reference number was not available to summon forensic experts as a case had not been registered.

When Masondo was further questioned by Express yesterday about forensic procedures and investigations, he said: “It is standard procedure that forensics should immediately be called to a crime scene in incidents of this nature, irrespective of the case being opened or not.

“If officers are found guilty of not following correct procedures, necessary disciplinary actions will be taken against them,” Masondo said.

As far as the Express and first responders observed on the scene, forensic experts were not present at the CBD guestroom on May 3.

A Free State police officer who is part of the team investigating the case of Yolandi Botes told Express that an official confirmed to him, telephonically, that a forensic investigation was conducted on May 6.

The officer also said: “The docket will be transferred to Boksburg SAPS for further investigation of Botes’ case since our jurisdiction deals with the discovery of Botes’ remains in the Vaal River.”

No confirmation has yet been received as to whether the case of Botes is linked to the scene in Kempton Park CBD.
