Makeup artist nominated for award
Here’s what it’s like to be a local makeup artist in Thembisa.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work as a makeup artist?
Don’t be perplexed any longer.
We spoke with Lloyd Thabede, aka Serurubele-Jones, a local makeup artist who has been nominated for the Mzansi Arts and Media Awards (Mama) in the best visual artist category.
Mama serves as a platform to uplift upcoming artists and creatives in South Africa.
Besides the prizes, the awards also enable artists to check on their progress in building a solid fan base.

Serurubele-Jones’ journey started as a hobby and turned into a career over the years.
“I have been painting people’s faces for over eight years now. It started as something to keep busy during my free time and has now turned into a career,” said Serurubele-Jones.
“Being a makeup artist necessitates a significant amount of effort, but it is well worth all the effort. You’ll get to see new things, meet new people, and try new things while making a difference in the world.
“My greatest regret is that I didn’t have the courage to fulfil my dream of being a makeup artist right away. After much support from those around me, I eventually decided that it was time to stop dreaming and start doing. I looked at several different courses, but none of them was quite right for me.
“I completed my diploma in beauty therapy and did my advance certificate in make-up application.
“The best aspect of many makeup artists’ jobs is watching someone’s face light up when they see their finished makeup for the first time.
“Being nominated as a visual artist is a great honour. I’m humbled.
