Community tip-off leads to arrest of two suspects

Two suspects were arrested for possession of stolen property and tampering with essential infrastructure with an estimated value of R450 000.

A community tip-off led to the arrest of two suspects in possession of Eskom equipment on Monday.

“At about 11am, Norkem Park SAPS received information regarding people burning copper cables in Dewald Street, Birchleigh North,” said Sgt Barbara Ferreira, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS.

After Vispol commander Lt-Col Tsoute and two sector managers arrived at the said address, two male suspects were stripping copper cables believed to be from a substation.
Ferreira said upon investigation, it was found the property belonged to Eskom.

The estimated value of the stolen equipment is said to be R450 000.

“The management of Eskom arrived on scene and identified the property. An Eskom register was found in an Isuzu bakkie belonging to an Eskom contractor. The owner of the premises where the Eskom property was found is a contractor for Eskom,” Ferreira stated.

The suspects appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on May 25. The investigation is still ongoing.

The police urge the community to keep a watchful eye on public infrastructure and to alert officials immediately about suspicious activities or tampering with power infrastructure and equipment.
