Mobile library promotes the culture of reading in ekasi

The Well of Wisdom Book Club launched a mobile library for learners in Grade Four to Grade Seven.

The Well of Wisdom Book Club aims to encourage literacy and make reading more accessible for its community members with the launch of a new mobile library in Thembisa.

The book club hosted a mobile library launch on May 26, powered by Pandrol and Sturrock and Robson, for Grade Four to Seven learners at Marhulana Primary School.

The club consists of a group of book readers who meet to discuss books they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes and other details of the book. The club was founded in February 2016.

In 2018, the book club partnered with the Global Forum of Women Entrepreneurs and launched the Well of Wisdom Junior Book Club.

The mobile library is in a form of a tuk-tuk loaded with books.

The tuk-tuk travels around township schools on a bi-monthly basis to promote the culture of reading and public speaking skills.

Learners who struggle to read are identified and encouraged to use the mobile library, which is open to them for the duration of the school term.

According to the founder of the mobile library, Ameli Tela, the identified learners will have the opportunity to select books, conduct book reviews and present them at the end of the programme to help improve their reading, listening and public-speaking skills.

“The mobile library will not only promote a culture of reading, but it will also increase access to children’s books for the schools that do not have libraries through the set bi-monthly sessions.

“The programme was initiated to show primary school learners that reading can be enjoyable and fun. In a society where most children and teens would rather watch reality TV or play videos games, we feel a programme of this nature will help learners not only in school but also in other areas to show them there are other beneficial ways to spend their time,” said Tela.
