Cansa tally funds in piggy banks as fed by local schools

Van Riebeeckpark managed to raise a whopping R15 377 while Laerskool Edleen made a hearty contribution of R5 604.

Collectively, Laerskool Van Riebeeckpark and Laerskool Edleen have raised nearly R21 000 in their piggy banks since May to support Cansa.

Cansa’s local Global Hero of Hope, Claudine Venter, rose to the task of facilitating the organisation’s fund-raising project in Kempton schools since Covid-19 restricted traditional funding methods.

“Each grade in these schools were given piggy banks to fill during the first school term and the grade whose piggy has the fullest tummy was handed a floating trophy,” Venter reported on Thursday.

Venter told Express that it was with a humble and grateful heart to announce that Laerskool Van Riebeeckpark managed to raise a whopping R15 377. The Grade Six Riebies who won the floating trophy raised R3 087.

Laerskool Edleen made a hearty contribution of R5 604 throughout the challenge, announcing the winning Grade Seven’s with their contribution of R2 488.

As a cancer survivor herself, championing the importance of the organisation that has supported her journey, Venter expressed her utmost sincere gratitude towards the youngsters of Kempton Park for their support.

“Cansa offers a unique integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer. As a leading role-player in cancer research (R4.5-million spent annually), the scientific findings and knowledge gained from their research are used to realign their health programmes and strengthening their watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public,” said Venter.

Cansa’s wide-reaching health programme includes prevention and education campaigns, patient care and support in the form of 13 interim homes and care centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer via the Cansa Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) programme.

Cansa gives out free cancer coping kits in English, seSotho, isiZulu and Afrikaans.

Venter said the remaining school enrolled in the fund-raiser, Shangri-La Academy, will be doing their fund handover during the third quarter of 2021.
