Mooifontein Cemetery subjected to vandalism, used as a shortcut by criminals
“The graveyard should be seen as a sacred place. As such, this situation is currently not ideal for families and friends who wish to visit their buried loved ones. We also had some incidents of vandalism and gravestones being destroyed,” said Sgt Barbara Ferreira.
Mooifontein Cemetery has been subjected to incidents of vandalism, destruction of gravestones and mob justice.
This is according to Norkem Park SAPS.
Spokesperson Sgt Barbara Ferreira of the station said one suspect was hospitalised and had to be guarded by SAPS as he was caught by the community and assaulted.

“This unfortunately also results in taking police officers off the streets as they have to guard the suspect implicated in mob justice,” said Ferreira.
“We have noticed the graveyard is being used as a shortcut between Thembisa and Norkem Park. This also assists criminals to flee quickly.
“This reality came to light as security guards open the boom gate at Tortelduif and Krombek roads and on the other side at Andrew Mpetho Drive towards Thembisa South to anyone driving through.
“It is my understanding that the reason for the boom gates is for people visiting the graveyard. These access points are now being misused.”
Ferreira explained that a slap wall was broken down in the middle of the graveyard.“The graveyard should be seen as a sacred place. As such, this situation is currently not ideal for families and friends who wish to visit their buried loved ones. We also had some incidents of vandalism.”
Ferreira said acts of mob justice is condemned. Instead, the community should rather phone the police on 10111 or 071 675 6803.
