LECD celebrates Youth Day in style
"There is no better way than to learn while having fun," said LECD secretary Fanyana Mthethwa.
Thembisa’s new NPO Life Empowering Community (LECD) hosted its inaugural event to mark Youth Day.
The event was held at Umthambeka Section and was sponsored by several institutions from Ekurhuleni, including Ekurhuleni West College (EWC), MSC Business College and Crypto Elite Academy.
LECD was able to empower young people in the community as they presented learners with educational information, which included educational guidance and measures to take when applying to higher institutions.
Although the event was intended to educate the youth in the community, it also provided a platform for them to express their enthusiasm for the day by demonstrating their artistic abilities.
Youngsters performed a variety of activities.

Tebogo Thobejani and Lindo Motau presented poetry, Musa Shabangu rapped, Fanzo Ramushi played the guitar, Ntombizodwa Dlamini entertained with vocals and VK music group also performed.
The youngsters were from various schools in Thembisa, including Phuthumami Primary School, Umthambeka Primary School, Thembisa West Primary School, and Giyana High School, which rendered theatre and dance performances.
LECD provided sanitary pads and toiletries to participants as a token of appreciation for their effort.
Ayanda Tshingana, LECD’s chairperson, expressed his gratitude to the community for its attendance and support of the event.
He also said that the behaviour of the community has changed since it was previously a norm for them to celebrate Youth Day by consuming alcohol, but that has changed; hence, they are now participating in community initiatives.
“Our event was a success and all credit goes to the young people who came out in numbers and supported the day.
“I am happy to say that our event was one of the ones that helped to reduce alcohol consumption on this public holiday,” Tshingana remarked.
LECD secretary Fanyana Mthethwa added that the organisation’s purpose is to empower young people with a choice of opportunities to help them become academically self-sufficient.
Mthethwa also said that he was ecstatic when two youngsters from the community told him that they want a place to showcase their talents on the public holiday.
“When Menzi Zwane from Umthambeka Section and Rachel Mohlala from Marikana Section approached me and said they needed a suitable venue to showcase their talent, I was overjoyed because some young people are more concerned with partying and alcohol than with anything else. That is how the event came about,” Mthwethwa said.
Mthwethwa also expressed his gratitude to the different stakeholders that participated in and supported the event, which aimed to empower the community while also honouring the 1976 youth who died in the Soweto uprising.
MSC Business College awarded bursaries to two learners within Umthambeka Section who matriculated in 2020 to pursue computer-related courses at their institution. LECD has yet to identify the learners.
