Local young musician aims to shape the future of jazz

It is clear that when Tshabalala plays, he pours his heart and soul into the music and instrument he loves.

Sbusiso Tshabalala (15) aims to be decades ahead of his peers in his musical career.

His love of jazz, a conviction in music’s ability to unite people and the desire to convey stories through composition are pushing him to create a name for himself in the industry.

For some people, it’s the thrill of being on stage, while for others it’s the hustle of getting gigs and buying the latest and greatest equipment. However, for Tshabalala, it’s the allure of the musician’s lifestyle.

“The journey started when I was in Grade Eight. My friend had a guitar who I asked to borrow me and soon I started performing. It’s been four years now. People are very supportive of my dream and I have a passion for it.”

“The truth is you don’t need to attend music school to be a musician. Many great musicians learned on their own. It all comes down to your level of dedication.

“I look up to Xolani Jazzmeloz Skhosana and Thabo Mabogwane from Black Motions. Jazzmelo is my mentor and my adviser. He educates me so much about the music industry and its challenges.

“My advice to my peers is to stay in school. Being a musician does not imply that you must stop school and make a career from it. That doesn’t mean you have to stop studying just to practise every hour of every day.

“It implies that music is an important part of your life and that you are willing to put in the effort necessary to reach your musical objectives. Anyone can tell you to work on your technique, study the theory, and seek out a teacher.

“Becoming a musician entails much more than just playing notes, practising a method and purchasing equipment. It all starts with you,” said Tshabalala.
