Sylvia Mofokeng finds purpose in helping those in need
Mofokeng is making a difference in the community by helping the needy.
Sylvia Mofokeng founded an NPO called Tawana to address the needs of the poor during the lockdown by providing food to families in need.
The NPO helps the community through its soup kitchen and clothing scheme, as well as empowering orphaned and disadvantaged youngsters.
The organisation’s headquarters are in Norkem Park, Extension Four, but it serves a large geographical area that includes Thembisa.
Mofokeng says the organisation focuses on the most vulnerable members of communities, including the elderly, the youth and abandoned children.

“We want to aid people who are living in poverty daily, the elderly who are unable to care for themselves, as well as disabled and abandoned children. “We run a weekly soup kitchen in and around Kempton Park and Thembisa that feeds up to 300 individuals. I’m also sheltering the orphaned in my home in Norkem Park.
“Life is difficult as it is with the rich getting richer and the destitute dying for food. It is heartbreaking because individuals are starving, lacking in education and some are homeless, especially during these tough times.
“If you live not only for yourself but also to help others, your life will be more meaningful. Poor people are an important part of our society, and no one should ignore them. Instead, they should consider what they can do to help.
“The Covid-19 regulations have had a significant impact on us because our main source of support has been coming from small enterprises, and most of these businesses have had to close as a result of the pandemic. As a result, people lost their jobs, which has increased the number of people requesting food parcels and warm clothes.
“We’re also having trouble with food parcels and transportation. It hurts when we are unable to distribute food parcels or operate our soup kitchen due to logistical issues, such as a broken bakkie or a lack of gasoline. Therefore, we call upon the community for assistance.
“To our friends in need, we are with you during these trying times,” said Mofokeng.
