DJ Twalatsa chats about his music career

“My journey has not been smooth sailing. There are various obstacles and challenges I have endured,” said DJ Twalatsa.

Legendary musicians are less likely to be compared with up-and-coming artists, but Mpumelelo Nkosi, who is known in Birch Acres as DJ Twalatsa, is slowly making waves within the tides of renowned artists.

The 33-year-old who describes himself as the ‘new generation kwaito DJ’ composes an amapiano genre.

DJ Twalatsa began his music career as a child by hanging behind the DJ booth and watching how other DJs operated their CDJs.

“I used to hang out by a corner house in my street where there was a pub, which played different types of music. I think that’s where my love for music began and the rest is history,” he said.

“My journey has not been easy though. I faced numerous challenges, particularly when it came to establishing my name as a young musician. To succeed, patience and perseverance are vital; everything gets difficult before it becomes seamless.”

DJ Twalatsa has showcased his talent at a variety of venues; however, his favourite venues are Jubilee Shisanyama in Kempton Park CBD and The Hang Awt 1632 in Endayini, Thembisa.

Fans know him for his favourite tracks, Ngisize Mdali by Ntokzin featuring Boohle and The Majestiez, which he tends to play on various occasions during his slots.

Despite being severely affected by the pandemic, he continues to work hard to ensure that his music career flourishes. He also aims to be an example to young people in the community who want to pursue their dreams but are afraid of rejection or not being good enough.

“I always live by one of Skhumba Hlophe’s quotes that is near and dear to my heart, “Never do things to impress your mates at the gigs you get, but make sure you leave your crowd the happiest. You will attend your friends after work,” he concluded.
