The Emergency Management Services managed to extinguish and contain the fire.

The City of Ekurhuleni Department of Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a fire incident that occurred at waste water treatment plant in Olifantsfontein on Friday, 09 July 2021.
The Emergency Management Services managed to extinguish and contain the fire.
The area affected by fire (a biofilter tank) was currently out of operation and being refurbished. The fire incident will therefore not have any impact on the current functioning and operation of the water care works, except for the delays in completion of the refurbishment project.

However, the full extent of the damage to the biofilter tank is being investigated, as well as the cause of the fire.
The Olifantsfontein Water Care Works is owned by the Ekurhuleni Water Care Company (ERWAT) which is an entity of the City.
The plant consists of three modules with a collective treatment capacity of 65 Mℓ/day (megalitres per day) and receives raw sewage from Tembisa, Chloorkop, Ivory Park, Clayville, Olifantsfontein and Midstream.
The water treatment work will continue uninterrupted, and the refurbishment of the biofilter tank which forms part of the Olifantsfontein Intervention Project to increase the capacity of the plant will resume once investigations are completed.
