Free maths and science tutorials by local NPO founder
“It is heartwarming to see the community offering a helping help.”
Rufus Seopa, the founder of the Real Youth Development Agency (RYDA), has taken the responsibility of mathematics and science tutoring for high school learners upon himself.
After witnessing the difficulties local learners encounter in these learning areas, the Winnie Mandela Zone Eight resident recently put his initiative of providing free tutorial classes in mathematics, physical sciences and maths literacy into practice.
“The initiative began on July 12 as a result of the hardships that I observed. Learners in our communities suffer in certain subjects, particularly mathematics, and that is what the programme is here for, to assist them in comprehending the content,” Seopa said.
According to Seopa, the programme’s objective is to instil an interest in subjects that may seem difficult learners and provide them with scientific skills that will aid them with a framework to address the difficulties they face in their communities.

“Learners have a lot of questions about how the world works. Maths and science teach them how to prepare to analyse challenges they will face in the future. With more scientists working to solve challenges, like the present pandemic, the world will be a better place.”
The programme offers weekly tutorial lessons to learners in various grades and schools, including Grades 10, 11 and 12 from Winnie Mandela High and Bokamoso Secondary schools.
All the teaching and learning takes place in a backroom that Seopa built himself.
Seopa also went above and beyond by serving porridge for breakfast so the learners could learn on full stomachs.
He is also thankful for the support from the community towards the programme.
“It is heartwarming to see the community offering a helping help.”
Seopa also said the pandemic left learners disoriented due to the instilled anxiety of not knowing if they will write their final exams.
“Thus far, we have 30 learners who attend at different time slots, hence, we are also adhering to the lockdown restrictions.”
Kgotlelelo Maupa from Winnie Mandela High School expressed his gratitude to Seopa for his help during this challenging time.
He believes the knowledge he receives from the programme will help him achieve good grades.
“The pandemic has had a significant impact on our teaching and learning time, as well as our mental health as learners. We are constantly filled with anxiety,” Kgotlelelo said.
“However, we are fortunate to be part of this programme to ensure we have a clear understanding of the subjects,” he said.
