#CaxtonCares: journos team up to spread the Christmas cheer

The year 2021 marks the 13th year that Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS will host its annual Christmas gift collection for the children at Pinocchio Educare Centre at Child Welfare SA – Edenvale and Bedfordview.

To further spread Christmas cheer, the NEWS’ sister publications Kempton Express, Thembisan and Germiston City News partnered to kick off a similar project in support of 87 identified children at Tshepang Care Centre in Thembisa.

“We hope that the Christmas gift collection for the children at Tshepang Care Centre will enjoy the same success as the project that has supported Pinocchio Educare Centre for the past 13 years. For many of the children, the only Christmas present they will receive will be those sponsored by readers of GCN, Thembisan and the Express,” said editor, Marietta Lombard.

The above decision came after GCN journalist, Obedience Mkhabela recently extended a helping hand to this Thembisa-based NPO that cares for about 400 plus children from the community of Thembisa, particularly from Vusimuzi informal settlement.

Obedience last week handed boxes of sandwiches over to Tshepang with the support of a Primrose-based charity iThemba Soup Kitchen and its founder, Jenny Scheigansz.

“Special thanks go to St Andrew’s School for Girls learner Tenique Ehlers-Labushchangne who made a donation of sandwiches to iThemba Soup Kitchen which in turn shared Tenique’s donation to Tshepang Care Centre. Your efforts are acknowledged and valued,” said Obedience.

“We call on readers to support this Christmas gift collection for these 87 children, specifically identified to benefit from this project,” said Lombard.

How it works
We invite our readers to “adopt” a child and buy a Christmas present (approximately R100 to R150) for that child.

Readers can phone journalist, Busi Vilakazi or editor Marietta Lombard on 011 822 1792 and we will provide you with a child’s name, age and gender to enable you to buy a special gift for him or her.

Gifts must be dropped off at the Germiston City News office at 25 Main Road, Fishers’ Hill by November 26 and we request that readers drop off these gifts unwrapped.

The news teams will ensure all gifts and packaging are sanitised at the drop-off at Tshepang Care Centre planned for early December.
