Olympian inspires young athletes

The Olympian told the children he originally wanted to be a fireman, but as soon as he reached high school the dream changed to being a soccer player.

The current Africa 100 metre record holder and Olympian, Akani Simbine, visited his old school Aston Manor Primary School (AMPS) on Friday morning as a surprise for the school’s athletes.

Simbine said, “Where I came from shaped me into the man I am today. Keep on dreaming because you can achieve the impossible.”

The Olympian also told the children he originally wanted to be a fireman, but as soon as he reached high school the dream changed to being a soccer player.

The athlete soon had to make the hard decision, choosing between soccer and athletics.

Simbine described the move as a risk he had to take to pursue his athletics dreams.

After the presentation, he was taken on a tour of the school and met some of his old teachers, including his grade R teacher Genie Tarr.

Simbine ended the tour by signing a pair of his running shoes, as well as his South Africa T-shirt.

The principal of AMPS, Werner Botha, received the shoes and T-shirt before posing for a photo.
