Jones took up his role as of February 1. The officer has been in the service for over three decades.
“I joined the force in 1985 and became a detective in 1996 at the Kempton Park branch. I was promoted to captain in 2000,” said Jones.
Jones has worked at various police stations, including Etwatwa, Daveyton, Senbenza, Edenvale and Olifantsfontein, in various roles, varying from detective branch commander to group leader.
He told Express he was doing his dream job.
“I always wanted to become an officer, especially a detective,” explained Jones.
“I have a great passion for investigating hefty cases, which is why, during my career journey, I joined the trio task team that was formed to deal with serious cases.
“I have had good successes over the years, including securing 11 life sentences and over 500 years’ imprisonment in different cases.”
Unknown suspects are among some of the challenges as a detective.
“It is not easy to investigate and look for an unknown suspect. This also brings the point that we, as police, can’t do it alone; we need the public to work with us as they are our eyes and ears.”
The newly appointed head of detectives believes one needs to have a calling to be an officer and detective.
“You need to have what it takes to do the job successfully and be willing to work hard. You can’t be bound by office hours if you want to get good results. Be willing to go the extra mile, do follow-ups, prepare statements and exhibits.
“Through all the ups and downs, there is great satisfaction and relief from a successful arrest to court conviction.
“I have an open-door policy, so if there is a problem, come and see me.”
