Mufandaedza believes all women are beautiful even when they’re not wearing cosmetics.

“With the correct makeup, they can be further empowered.”

She opted to work in the beauty industry, where she can teach women how to harness their outer and inner beauty.

“I exude confidence and grew up in a family of make-up artists, including my mother, aunt and sister-in-law. It is a family affair. I began my profession in 2019 when I started sharing photos of my work on social media.

“My work has been noticed. I’ve worked at weddings and with actors from South Africa and Zimbabwe, including Raphael Griffiths from Imbewu and Zim-SA musician Buffalo Souljah. I received requests to teach people how to do make-up and gave it a shot. To my surprise, it worked. Some of my students are employed at beauty salons and others are self-employed.

“The best part of my job is teaching other women to take care of their faces and seeing the confidence they gain after I’ve done their make-up.”

The Kemptonian credits her perseverance to her hardworking mother’s motivation.

“She is a hardworking woman who always encourages me to stay focused.

“The most difficult challenge we face as make-up artists is when production companies underpay us and some do not pay at all. They claim they will provide us with exposure. Exposure alone is not enough. Another challenge is robbery when we go on house calls. There have been cases of make-up artists being raped or robbed; I have been a victim of a robbery,” said Mufandaedza.

Her advice to potential make-up artists is to be comfortable in their skin and confident.

“Working as a make-up artist entails connecting with people. Therefore, if you can’t or don’t enjoy being around people, this is not the career for you,” said Mufandaedza.
