Elections of ward committees kick off

Ward committee elections will run from March 28 to April 30.

The City of Ekurhuleni has been in the process of establishing ward committees and the nomination process closed on March 11.
Ward committee elections will run from March 28 to April 30.

Central to the development of participatory democracy at the local government level is a need to observe governance values in the establishment of democratically representative structures.

Ward committees aid the council to run the city by focusing on providing ward-based interventions and empowering communities by giving them a platform to have a say in how their wards are run.
The CoE Ward Committee policy under its election procedure states that the election of ward committees will take place on a sector basis.

A maximum of 10 sectors can be represented in a ward committee.

These are women and children; aged and disability; faith-based organisations; youth, environmental development; infrastructure services; economic planning; city planning; health and social development; sports, heritage, recreation and arts and community safety.

Speaker of Council Clr Raymond Dhlamini encouraged participation from communities in this process.
“Advancing social change through service delivery is our responsibility as government. Structures like ward committees ensure the expansion of our constitutional democracy is safeguarded by our citizens.”

Residents are urged to look out for dates and venues of elections in their wards on all library, clinic and Customer Care Centre notice boards and on all City of Ekurhuleni social media platforms.
