During her State of City Address, Mayor Tania Campbell highlighted the appointment of the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC).
“The LDAC will be launched by the end of April,” she said.
Express approached the media liaison of the DA in Ekurhuleni, Clr Khathutshelo Rasilingwane, for more information on the committee and its purpose.
Rasilingwane said that the LDAC is part of the City’s strategy to combat the increasing rate of drug and substance abuse in communities.
“It is also an initiative that will strongly benefit our youth through a larger behavioural change program that pays attention to issues such as life skills, career choices, gender-based violence, HIV and teenage pregnancies,” said Rasilingwane.
This programme is part of a behavioural change initiative targeted at young people of Ekurhuleni or those residents who need help with related issues to drug abuse.
“The city plans to reach 3 000 youth members who are at risk within the next financial year,” said Rasilingwane.
She said more information will be communicated to the public when the initiative is launched at the end of April.
