Roads blocked in Tembisa due to protest

Cable theft in Makhulong and surrounding areas leaves residents in the dark and with frustration.

The community of the Makhulong Section in Tembisa took to the streets in protest of the dilapidating electricity issues in the area on May 10.
Ward 4 councillor Masilela Francis Kgafela stated the cause of the protest is the people’s frustration with the supply of electricity.
“Residents in Makhulong, Kopanong, and other places around the area have been without power for the past days. This is caused by cable theft.”
Kgafela said the community had received transformers from Eskom, but were smaller than anticipated and not enough to fully accommodate the needs of these communities.
Residents became so frustrated at the prospect of being without power for days that they blocked the intersection of Andrew Mapheto and Reverend RTJ Namane drives.
Kgafela said he notified the Department of Energy when he was informed of the theft, requesting a repair team.
“Initially, residents had blocked the road. I requested the residents to open the road so that the issue could be resolved, and they did,” said Kgafela.
