Artist steps out of his comfort zone with new mixtape

‘An uncomfortable existence’ contains 10 tracks.

King Kgothatso Mguni (22), also known as The Art Doctor, released a new 10-track mixtape on May 16.

The Leboeng resident has released a couple of projects before and says the making of his recent mixtape (An Uncomfortable Existence) has been a learning curve as he had to make a careful consideration about the messages the mixtape holds for the audience.

He says he had to go out of his comfort zone as he had to make use of what he had to accomplish the project.

“What I’ve learnt through making this project was letting the music write itself. In my former days, I was known as King G the Rapper, and me being The Art Doctor now was a way of expressing myself in almost every art form.

“I’ve had the opportunity to learn how to make my beats, cover art and so forth, so this mixtape just encompasses my abilities as the ‘doctor’.” said Mguni.

Mguni says the mixtape is a testament to how he has overcome challenges in his life.

He says every aspect was carefully considered to be relatable to his audience as they also might have faced similar trials.

“As much as we are different as individuals, we somehow face similar trials and when I testify about how I overcame them I can help someone else to do the same.

“The concept of the mixtape is purely about acceptance, while the message is about knowing who you are and that there’s no way you can grow and be comfortable at the same time.

“If you look at the cover art that I designed there’s a message behind me holding up the earth. When you look close enough the globe looks like it’s been cut out so it’s like I’m holding up this weight that’s been cut out for me,” said Mguni.

The mixtape, which has been promoted on social media since its release, has been recognised by the South African hip-hop community. Mguni says fans can expect a music video for the fifth track Kingdom while they catch up on the project on various streaming platforms.
