Thembisa youth engage in GBV dialogue
Young people took a stand to be the solution and implement change to address challenges of GBV.
Generation G for gender justice youth hosted a GBV dialogue on June 3 at Tshepang Care Centre, Vusimuzi.

Young people in Thembisa came in numbers to see the creation of a gender-just and violence-free community.
Busiswe Majola, who attended the dialogue, highlighted how unsafe she felt in Thembisa.
“It’s disheartening because this is home,” said Majola.
The dialogue took place nearly three months after news reports broke of a Tembisa Hospital assistant nurse, Lebo Monene, who was gunned down near a centre that helps abused women.
The young people in the room boldly took a stand to be the solution and implement change to address the challenge of GBV as being a community issue and not just a matter between two people.
Co-facilitator and organiser of the dialogue Selokela “Slu” Molamodi shared her passion for gender justice and the importance of such dialogues between the youth with the Thembisan.

“Today it became apparent how we are all affected by GBV as we had learners in uniform who joined the conversation. That shows how the spectrum is changing, violence is trickling down to the younger generation,” said Molamodi.
Supported by organisations such as Activate Change Drivers, Sonke Gender Justice, Action Aid and Girl Power, the youth left the dialogue with a commitment to become the change the community urgently needs.
They expressed how tiresome the news reports and statistics are, and saw June as being the right time to heed the call to rally for the realisation of gender-just societies in this generation.
