Travel Harambee for Thembisans

MMC for Transport and Planning Alco Ngobese embarked on a three day public participation to encourage the use of the Harambee Busses in Ekurhuleni.

MMC for Transport Alco Ngobese gave Thembisan residents a taste of the Harambee bus experience in an effort to encourage commuters to frequently use the transportation.

The free tour that included school children, people with disabilities and the elderly, took place from June 22 to 25.

The MMC invited various people from Thembisa for a ride on the Harambee bus to showcase what the buses had to offer.

Ngobese explained to the Thembisan the purpose of the trip.

Different features of the Harambee bus were showcased to people living with disabilities.

“We want to share the Harambee experience with Ekurhuleni’s focus groups. This includes the effectiveness of the bus and its compatibility with the needs of the people living with disabilities.

“As you enter the bus the first thing you will notice is the wheelchair ramp, which allows anyone access into the bus which has enough space for movement inside.

“The bus also has designated seating for people with disabilities and those who make use of wheelchairs,” said the MMC.

The department, whose core purpose is to provide high-quality, integrated, and well-maintained transport infrastructure and integrated public transport systems, explained to the focus groups what the buses had to offer.

The guests were also given a tour of one of Harambee Thami Mnyele Station and the various services available for people of the community and those living with disabilities.

MMC of Transport embarked on a three-day public participation campaign to encourage Thembisans to make use of the Harambee buses.

 

Invited to experience were the Thembisa Self-Help Association of the Disabled (T-SHAD), school learners from Endulwini Primary School, Thembinkosi LSEN School, Esselyn Park (elderly), Phumolong (elderly), and Phuthanang Training Centre (elderly) among a few.

“We are running a flat rate pilot project, which makes a trip to the OR Tambo International Airport and the surrounding areas at a cost of R15.

Commuters can travel from Isando to Hospital View, Kempton Park and the surrounding areas for that affordable fee.”
