The stars returned home after making the country proud by winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation (WAFCON) in Morocco on July 23.

Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell was among the dignitaries who were joined by hundreds of South Africans to welcome the Banyana-Banyana stars at the OR Tambo International Airport.

During the event, which saw throngs of fans descending on the airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni mayor Tania Campbell said: “Today is a special day for all South Africans, and it comes at a time when the national morale has been low due to the rising cost of living, the spate of tavern killings and our energy supply issues with Eskom”.

“Banyana-Banyana has made us proud, and their win will go a long way towards nation-building. We know you will do exceptionally well in the upcoming World Cup,” she said.
