Birch Acres designer proud of his upcycled garments
The Birch Acres resident started his thrift in an effort to make old clothes trendy again.
Birch Acres resident Junior Masondo (23) grew up interested in fashion.

Masondo took his interest in secondhand clothing to the next level when he started his training in fashion design at SewAfrica Fashion College where most of his designs are sought after by young people as far as the Free State.
The young fashion designer started his thrift store to make old clothes trendy again.
“Fashion has always been a part of me. I started showing serious interest in fashion when I was about 16 years old. I just feel like fashion is a way of expressing myself.”
His biggest inspiration comes from Ian Connor who is a fashion stylist.
“I was always interested in how he puts his outfits together. I also follow people like South African designer Thebe Magugu,” said Masondo.
His thrift store sold unique secondhand clothing to the youth however things took a turn when he started upcycling the garments for a greater look.

“What started as a thrift store, became a brand because I would manipulate the jeans and jackets to upscaled garments. Now I even print T-shirts,” said Masondo.
The young fashion design graduate recently developed the store into a clothing brand and said he hopes to create an environment where young creatives can come together and share ideas.
Masondo enjoys challenging the rules of fashion.
