Thembisa organisations discuss importance of Women’s Month

Organisations in Tembisa look back on 1956 and continue what the women back then had dreamt of and achieved.

August is Women’s Month and Thembisan approached organisations in the area to get their thoughts on the month and its importance.

Lebone Rivoningo Developments, a charity organisation, said Women’s Month reminds their beneficiaries that women can have bright futures ahead of them.

Thato One Big Family LGBTQ+ Society (TOBF) attended an event hosted by Rivonia Cycle in New Town.

“The majority of our mentors are women. Our foundation is built on women.

“We celebrate ourselves and remind ourselves that we matter and nothing can stop us from becoming better and achieving our goals,” said Modjadji Selowui, founder of the charity organisation.

Selowui said they acknowledge the role played by the women of 1956 in paving the way for their freedom. She added that the journey for women’s emancipation continues.

“We still have a lot to address, change and fix. I have faith that women will get there,” Selowui said.

Jabulile Maseko, founder and CEO of the You Are Not Alone Women and Family (YANA) organisation, said Women’s Month highlights the progress they have made as women since 1956 and how they continue to break barriers in careers and business.

“For those at YANA, this month is about growing as a woman and patting ourselves on the back to say we are doing alright and we aim to continue fighting to create gender neutrality,” said Maseko.

Maseko said the organisation, along with People Opposing Women Abuse, Thato One Big Family, Ekurhuleni Social Workers and SAPS, also educate parents about positive parenting.

She said this creates a conducive environment for children to grow in which they teach them about love, respect and empathy.

“These factors promote pro-social behaviour and allow children to articulate their feelings, specifically our sons, as they are the ones that hide their emotions,” added Maseko.

Maseko said they have a matric motivational tour drive with the Department of Education around Thembisa schools to remind children about the value of education.

Thato One Big Family LGBTQ+ Society (TOBF) attended an event hosted by Rivonia Cycle in New Town, Thembisa on August 9.

“It was about empowering the youth and what they wanted to be in the future and being proud of their feminine side,” said Makhosazana Buthelezi, founder of the TOBF.

Buthelezi said the aim was to network with people and also empower each other.

A women’s conference was held on August 9 at 849 Ebuhleni Street in Umthambeka Section at the Global Harvest Church.
