The aim of the event was to motivate learners to read books independently.
This was done to enhance their vocabulary, independent reading ability and reading comprehension.
The reading challenge’s creator, Christina Lephalala of Moduopo Primary School, said she decided on the reading challenge after realising the school had several unread books.
“There is a big challenge with learners as their reading is poor. Many do not read at home and Covid-19 also affected this.
“I decided to take advantage of the opportunity by using the books that the leaners had never read before to get them interested.
“When a learner finishes one book they receive acknowledgement.
“During the awards ceremony, a reading quiz was held to test their knowledge on the books they have read.
“The most popular series read by learners were Dork Diaries and Dirty Berty, amongst others. They showed their knowledge of the books with ease and an improved vocabulary.”
Learners were presented with stationery packs from Membithisi Foundation.
