Alleged serial rapist arrested

The suspect was apprehended in Mayfield

Members of specialised SAPS teams arrested a suspected serial rapist in Mayfield, Daveyton, on January 22.

According to a reliable source, the suspect, in his late 30s, might be linked to the rape of more than 20 women in Putfontein and Tembisa.

Joint investigations by the SAPS Benoni and Tembisa Family Violence and Child Protection and Sexual Offences units (FCS) led to the arrest.

Information indicates that the suspect was most active between 2020 and last year and would target women on the side of the road by offering them a lift.

He was reportedly dressed in a uniform when he picked up the women and is believed to work in the security industry.

He appeared in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on January 24 on a charge of rape related to a case reported in Putfontein.

This is a developing story and the Benoni City Times awaits a formal statement from the Gauteng Provincial SAPS spokesperson.
