This came about after the four accused were sentenced to life in prison for murder and 15 additional years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
According to Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the four suspects followed the now-deceased victim from North Mead Mall, Benoni, after he had withdrawn R40 000 to pay his employees.
“The victim was followed by a BMW and a white VW Polo. When he arrived in Chloorkop, two armed men approached him and demanded he hand over the money,” said Sekgobela.
The victim allegedly had his firearm in his possession, and a shootout ensued.
He shot one suspect and sustained three gunshot wounds himself.
“The suspects took R20 000, picked up their accomplice, put him in their vehicle, and drove away.”

The victim was airlifted to hospital. While at the crime scene, police received information that someone was admitted to Zamokuhle Private Hospital with a gunshot wound.
Officers visited the hospital and a man was arrested.
“The victim died in hospital two weeks later. During further investigations, information was received and three more suspects were apprehended and linked to the murder of the victim,” said Sekgobela.
“The case was taken to South Gauteng High Court where the accused were trialled. The same suspects were also charged with more counts of robbery where other victims were followed from different banks.”
The four accused from Thembisa were found guilty on charges of murder and robbery. They were sentenced on January 26.

“This is the kind of example we want criminals to learn when it comes to criminal activities in Ekurhuleni district,” said Sithole.
