Express and Kempton’s SPCA team up for food collection drive

“We would never say no to monetary donations because we have other expenses to cover including petrol, vet bills, rates and taxes and more."

In an attempt to bolster the organisation’s food supply in time for winter, the Kempton Express has teamed up with the Kempton Park SPCA to host a food drive.

“As it stands we have barely any food. We need dog as well as cat food. Puppy food would be first prize for us because we can feed it to our puppies as well as to our adult dogs.

“Sometimes the dogs that come in have been through so much and the only thing we can feed them is puppy pellets because it’s more nutritious,” said Kempton Park SPCA manager Kira Sparrow.

The organisation is also in need of blankets for the animals as the winter chill starts to set in.

“We are about 80% full at the moment and at any given time we have between 80 and 120 dogs and around 40 cats to look after and feed,” said Sparrow.

She added the Kempton Park SPCA fortunately has a high adoption rate.

“We are blessed but no two days are ever the same. We accept animals every day, all day, but ask that those coming through to surrender their pets do so during office hours for the correct forms to be filled in.”

Sparrow asked the community to consider supporting the organisation every month.

“We need residents to consider buying a bag of puppy or cat food for us every month. This would mean we have a constant food supply for the animals in our care,” she said.

Food donations are not only used to feed the animals currently housed at the SPCA but are also used during outreach campaigns.

“We often have reports of abandoned animals and need to make sure we can feed those animals where they were abandoned while looking for their owners,” Sparrow said.

“We would never say no to monetary donations because we have other expenses to cover including petrol, vet bills, rates and taxes and more,” she added.

Until May 5, residents can drop food and blanket donations for the SPCA off at the Kempton Express offices situated at 126 Monument Road.

The Express offices are open from 08:00 to 16:00 from Monday to Friday.

All donations will be handed to the SPCA on Monday, May 8.
