Monument Road maintenance scheduled

Dlamini said the maintenance on Monument Road streetlights commenced on April 24.

Much-needed maintenance is scheduled for Monument Road.

This is according to spokesperson for the City of Ekurhuleni, Zweli Dlamini, following multiple enquiries by the Kempton Express.

Residents and business owners on Monument Road said that unresolved issues pose a safety hazard.

In the March 9 edition of the Express, resident Mark Lodder said he had several concerns, such as a major water leak in Action Park, stolen cables in the same park, non-functioning street lights on Monument Road and Witgatboom Avenue and a manhole cover which didn’t fit correctly.

Monument Road business owner John Streicher holds up the ill-fitting manhole cover that he’s asked many times to be replaced.

Lodder said the poorly fitting manhole cover is easily displaced by trucks and other vehicles and posed a hazard to pedestrians and vehicles.

The lack of lighting on Witgatboom Avenue and Monument Road has had a knock-on effect on crime in the area.

“Every time we report the streetlights we are told they are not a priority,” he said.

In November last year, a main water pipe outside Lodder’s property burst.

“It was reported and fixed the same day but the hole was not filled. When I questioned itI was told that the hole needed to stay open for 14 days before it could be filled.

“Twenty-one days after the pipe was repaired a car came around the corner, clipped the rubble and drove into the still unfixed hole breaking the pipe again. The next day the pipe was repaired again. Only at the end of January did a team arrive to backfill the repair,” Lodder said.

The added cover of darkness presented an opportunity for thieves to steal a manhole cover at the intersection of Monument Road and Witgatboom Avenue. It was replace with this cover which does not fit.

When the Express visited the area recently to meet with business owners, John Streicher and Blacky Swart, the repairs resulting from the November leak had still not been rehabilitated.

Additionally, while an underground water leak near the intersection of Monument Road and Witgatboom Avenue had been repaired, the area also needed rehabilitation.

“Monument Road is one of the busiest roads in Kempton Park but there are no lights on this section of road,” said Steicher.

“We pay a litter picking fee of R187 every month on our municipal accounts but never see such a service,” added Streicher.

Dlamini said the maintenance on Monument Road streetlights commenced on April 24.

“This will be continuous, and ongoing. We are receiving a high number of calls of streetlight infrastructure vandalism in the area during load-shedding,” said Dlamini.

He added that the backfilled area at the site of the two water leaks needed to be reinstated. “This will be done by May 15.”

Dlamini said further comment would be provided to the Express as soon as it was available.
