World AIDS Day campaign supports sex workers with health education and rights awareness in Kempton Park
Kempton Park SAPS and community partners marked World AIDS Day by engaging sex workers on Kerk Street, offering health services, legal guidance and social support.
Kempton Park SAPS Social Crime Prevention, together with People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), Sekusile Ekhaya Health and Support, McDonald’s Mobile Barber, Nizamiye: Time to Care, and other stakeholders, held a World AIDS Day awareness campaign on December 1.
The campaign focused on engaging sex workers in Kerk Street, educating them on their rights and the proper procedures for opening cases if their human rights are violated.
“Everyone has the right to open a case, but we have noticed some cases being opened by women for instances such as clients refusing to pay for services rendered.

“We explained that opening a rape case in such situations could result in charges of perjury,” said Kempton Park SAPS Sergeant Ntombifuthi Abrokwa.
Sekusile Ekhaya Health and Support distributed condoms to promote safety in line with World AIDS Day and conducted tests for HIV, AIDS, STIs and STDs.
In addition, the McDonald’s Mobile Barber provided free haircuts to community members, while stakeholders distributed food parcels donated by Nizamiye: Time to Care.
These gestures acknowledged that hunger and poverty often contribute to why some people end up on the streets.
