Alt Academy showcases aviation careers to Kempton Park youth

Alt Academy welcomed industry stakeholders for an educational insight day on July 16, showcasing the opportunities available within the aviation sector.

The event aimed to expose young people to the wide range of career paths available in aviation, including cabin crew, pilots and simulator operations.

Alt Academy CEO Ryan Van Wijk said initiatives like these are important because aviation is a growing industry that many young people are unaware of.

“We are an independent training organisation that doesn’t just sell a product, but ensures students are career ready. I encourage the youth to get off their phones, look up at the doors available and open them because they are within reach. We are here to help you do it,” said Van Wijk.

The programme included presentations from industry experts, testimonials from ground staff, live demonstrations and a tour of the academy’s facilities.

During the tour, attendees viewed the academy’s simulators, which feature realistic visuals, navigation systems and engine systems designed to replicate various environmental conditions experienced around the world.

Alt Engineering head of technical Albert Lephoko explained the importance of simulators in aviation training.

“The simulators save lives. They remove the risk of a trainee using an actual aircraft while allowing them to gain experience and complete exercises without endangering anyone, while also reducing fuel costs.

“Going forward, we plan on setting up aircraft maintenance basic training, offering non-accredited welding courses and electronics training so people can establish their own workshops in their neighbourhoods and help reduce unemployment,” said Lephoko.

Alt Academy alumna Lindiwe Langa said the support she received from lecturers contributed to an unforgettable experience.

“I didn’t think I could do it. It goes to show that if I can do it, anyone can do it. I’m blessed to be an example for young black women in the aviation space. If I can do it, they can do it better,” said Langa.

The organisation is also encouraging schools in Kempton Park to participate in a new initiative offering Grade 10 to 12 learners tutoring in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

The programme will run every Saturday throughout the year, aimed at supporting learners interested in pursuing opportunities within the aviation sector.
