SPARK Kempton Park learners dressed up as scientists on August 6 as part of National Science Week.
The day included interactive experiments, STEM career awareness activities and an awards ceremony recognising the top achievers from Term Two across various subjects, including mathematics.
SPARK Kempton Park principal Desiree Naidoo said the school aims to develop scientifically literate learners by making science engaging and accessible.
“By showcasing how different experiments are conducted, we show them what science is all about and create a love for science. It shows children that we care about them thriving in different faculties and brings back the fun element, because when you think of serious jobs, they often think there isn’t fun involved,” said Naidoo.

She added that the school’s integrated approach to teaching science helps learners build confidence and encourages them to consider future careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“By building their confidence, they will want to go out into different careers related to science and maths,” she said.
Educators Londiwe Buthelezi and Thandeka Notshikila led the experiments and encouraged learners to participate.
Notshikila said the activities helped learners see science as something exciting and practical.
“I hope the scholars see that STEM is interesting and fun, especially when they do it themselves. I have realised that they often get scared because when they hear science, they think it is just maths. Once they come and do experiments themselves, they understand it better,” she said.
Grade Five learner Neo Ezenwa said the activities helped bring science to life.

“I had so much fun today! My favourite experiment was the elephant-based explosion. I really liked the process of mixing the baking soda, toothpaste and vinegar,” she said.
