EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said officers were patrolling on the R21 freeway when they noticed the vehicle.

“A blue VW Golf 7 R32, without registration plates, overtook them at high speed, and a chase ensued.
“The suspicious hatchback with one occupant was cornered, stopped, and searched on the Voortrekker Road off-ramp.
“The officers found a registered 9mm CZ pistol under the driver’s seat,” said Thepa.
Officers learnt that the vehicle was reported stolen in Sandton last February.

The man was taken to the Kempton Park Police Station and charged with the possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
“The recovered VW Golf was taken to the Van Ryn Deep police yard in the Benoni area. The suspect will soon appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
“As EMPD officers, we attend to daily complaints regarding stolen motor vehicles.
“We advise motor vehicle owners to deactivate their keyless start functionality.
“Thieves prefer to work in the dark. Be cautious where you park your car at night, and always try to park in well-lit areas.
“Motorists are advised to fit a gear lock bar and steering lock to their vehicle and install a tracking device,” Thepa said.
