An intelligence-driven operation by the EMPD’s Tracing Unit, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG) and Blue Hawk Tactical, led to the arrest of a 43-year-old man in Thembisa this week.
According to EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato, the operation followed up on information about a possible stolen vehicle and firearms at a residence on Bazarhuti Street. Officers recovered a Mazda CX-5 with false registration plates.

Further checks confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen under a Daveyton case number.

During the operation, the suspect was found in possession of a Star 9mm firearm with its serial number filed off, 26 live rounds of ammunition and pieces of an EMPD uniform.
Makgato noted that investigators are looking into how the suspect came into possession of the uniform.
“We’ve been dealing with numerous cases of individuals impersonating police officers to exploit the vulnerable and carry out criminal activities,” he said.
The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if it has been used in any other crimes.
