Norkem Park SAPS investigate murder-suicide in Birchleigh North

According to preliminary police information, two vehicles at the property on Emberen Street were also set on fire at around 01:30.

Norkem Park SAPS have launched an investigation into a case of murder and inquest following a suspected domestic violence-related incident that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 22.

According to preliminary police information, the incident took place at around 01:30 on Emberen Street.

“It is alleged that a father fatally shot his 20-year-old son before turning the firearm on himself,” said Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant DP Mkhondo.

She added that the family’s 16-year-old son reportedly managed to escape from the house during the shooting.

“It is further alleged that the suspect set two vehicles parked in the garage on fire before taking his own life.”

Emergency services were summoned to the scene and declared both the father and his son deceased.

Norkem Park SAPS station commander, Colonel Nelly Maunatlala, urged members of the public to seek help if they are experiencing domestic conflict or abuse before it escalates into tragedy.

“We encourage anyone facing domestic violence to reach out for help. Support and intervention are available,” said Colonel Maunatlala.

Victims of domestic violence can contact their nearest police station’s Victim Empowerment Centre, local social workers, or the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC) at 0800 428 428 for immediate assistance.
