Kempton Park highway heist suspects back in court

According to the state, 212 witness statements, along with ballistic reports and data related to jamming devices, are still outstanding.

Four of the six suspects arrested in connection with a series of highway robberies around Kempton Park appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court today, October 24.

Those arrested include two SAPS officers, two Gauteng Traffic Police officers, and two civilians. The case has been postponed to January 14 to allow for further investigation.

According to the state, 212 witness statements, along with ballistic reports and data related to jamming devices, are still outstanding.

Bail was previously granted on March 28 to the four officers, each set at R10 000.

The suspects face several serious charges, including:

  • Armed robbery of a Toyota Hilux GD-6

  • Possession of prohibited firearms and 23 rounds of ammunition

  • Kidnapping of three victims who were later abandoned in Atteridgeville and Midrand

  • Contravention of the Telecommunications Act through the use of jamming devices

A video circulating on social media appears to show two traffic officers stopping a G4S security van, while a police officer can be seen standing nearby holding a firearm.

The footage further captures two civilians forcibly removing the security guards from the van and kidnapping them.

The court is expected to reconvene on January 14, when the matter will continue.
