Police give Black Friday safety tips for shoppers in Sebenza

The community is advised to be cautious of strangers in need of help, as this could be a distraction tactic for robbery.

As Black Friday approaches, the Sebenza SAPS urges the public to remain vigilant in shops and on the streets.

Residents should keep their bags zipped, hold them close to their bodies, and never leave them unattended on trolleys.

The community should also be wary of strangers asking for help. It could be a distraction tactic used in robberies.

Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso, the spokesperson for Sebenza SAPS, recommends that shoppers buying multiple items put them in the car boot rather than leaving them visible in the vehicle.

She also urges residents to stay alert when leaving shopping centres.

“If you suspect you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station, where you will be safe,” said Tsotsotso.

On arriving home, she advises against parking directly in front of your gate or driveway to avoid being blocked in or potentially trapped.

Residents should also be cautious of online scammers during Black Friday and wary of deals that seem too good to be true.
