Two suspected hijackers were arrested after a high-speed police chase ended in Birchleigh North on August 5.

According to Norkem Park SAPS communication officer Sergeant Portia Mkhondo, the incident began after a grey Kia Sportage was allegedly hijacked within the Kempton Park policing precinct.

Security officers and law enforcement agencies, including the EMPD, responded immediately and pursued the vehicle.

During the chase, which ended on Pongola River Drive, an exchange of gunfire reportedly took place between the suspects and officers.

“One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound during the incident,” said Mkhondo.

The two male suspects, believed to be between 30 and 35 years old, were arrested. The injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard for medical treatment.

“Police recovered the hijacked Kia Sportage, as well as two firearms allegedly found in the suspects’ possession,” said Mkhondo.

She added that the firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they may have been used in the commission of other crimes.

The suspects are expected to face charges of hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted murder, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, as well as any additional charges arising from the ongoing police investigation.
