Gauteng police arrest over 1 000 during weekend’s Operation Shanela
A crime-fighting operation across Gauteng resulted in police targeting drug possession, illegal immigration and crimes against women and children.
Gauteng police have arrested 1 118 suspects during the weekend’s multidisciplinary Operation Shanela across the province’s five policing districts.
The arrests included 142 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led a multidisciplinary high-density operation in the Ivory Park policing precinct in the Ekurhuleni District on Saturday, September 26.
During the operation, police conducted a roadblock which resulted in the arrest of 23 suspects for allegedly being in the country illegally.

A further nine suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 13 were arrested for possession of drugs.
Police also impounded a maroon minibus after allegedly discovering that its engine had been tampered with.
Meanwhile, Gauteng detectives arrested 677 suspects for various crimes, including 154 suspects for crimes against women and children.
Operation Shanela was conducted through a multidisciplinary approach involving the police, the Department of Home Affairs, traffic law enforcement agencies, Community Policing Forums, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens and private security companies.

Gauteng police said they remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents through sustained crime prevention operations aimed at reducing crime, combating criminality and maintaining law and order across the province.
