EMPD arrests undocumented person for tampering with essential infrastructure

The suspect was found with aluminium cable and tools allegedly used to cut cables from an electrical box.

The EMPD OR Tambo precinct officers arrested a 29-year-old undocumented male for tampering with essential infrastructure in Kempton Park on September 22.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said around 07:30, while officers were conducting patrols along the R21 freeway just after the Atlas Road off-ramp, they caught the suspect in the act of tampering with electrical infrastructure.

The suspect was found in possession of aluminium cable and tools used to cut cables from an electrical box.

Thepa said the suspect was subsequently apprehended and detained at the Kempton Park Police Station and is expected to appear before the relevant Magistrate’s Court soon.

In a separate incident later that same day, officers were deployed to track down suspects who were reportedly removing cables from infrastructure along the R21 freeway.

The incident was captured by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) cameras monitoring the freeway.

On arrival at the identified location, officers discovered that copper cables had been dug up and removed from the infrastructure; however, no suspects were found at the scene.
