Two men were arrested in Kempton Park on September 29 after EMPD officers allegedly uncovered an attempted bribe, immigration offences and suspected dagga during a vehicle stop.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, EMPD Overload Unit officers were patrolling near the intersection of Greyilla Avenue and Noordrand Road when they stopped a blue Renault Kwid carrying two occupants.

The driver, a 28-year-old foreign national, allegedly presented a foreign driver’s licence but was unable to produce a valid passport and work permit, as required under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.

Thepa said the driver was also unable to produce the required operating permit or licence in terms of the National Land Transport Act while operating as an e-hailing driver.

During the interaction, the driver allegedly offered the officers R350 in an attempt to bribe them.

“He was immediately placed under arrest,” said Thepa.

A search of the 26-year-old passenger allegedly resulted in the discovery of approximately 1.015kg of suspected dagga.

The suspected drugs were allegedly packaged in six small zip-lock bags, one medium zip-lock bag and one large bag, which was found underneath the passenger seat.

Thepa said officers also found R1 600 in cash inside a side bag worn by the passenger. The cash is suspected to be proceeds from the alleged sale of dagga.

Both men were arrested and detained at Kempton Park Police Station.

They are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

The allegations against the men have not been tested in court, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
