Fatal shooting on R21 leaves driver dead, passenger wounded

The driver attempted to flee from the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle, which collided with a jersey barrier.

A driver was killed and a passenger wounded in a shooting on the R21 towards OR Tambo International Airport on the evening of October 5.

According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder following the incident.

“Preliminary information indicates that the driver was travelling in a Fiat when the vehicle reportedly broke down. The driver then contacted a friend for assistance,” said Nevhuhulwi.

According to police the friend arrived at the scene with two other people. While they were attending to the vehicle, shots were fired at them.

“The driver attempted to flee from the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle, which collided with a jersey barrier.”

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

One of the passengers sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The third occupant escaped unharmed.

Nevhuhulwi said the motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

No arrests have been made at this stage, and police investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and identify those responsible.
