Rising spring demand: Ekurhuleni urges water-saving measures

The city continues to reduce water losses through pipe upgrades, meter replacements, and effective billing, ensuring a sustainable and reliable supply for all.

The City of Ekurhuleni urges all residents to adopt water-saving practices to help ensure a sustainable and reliable supply for everyone.

Seasonal factors such as warmer temperatures in spring typically increase water demand.

This could undermine the significant progress the city has made in effective water management.

In July, the city’s Non-Revenue Water (NRW) decreased by 1.38% compared to July 2024.

This reduction indicates more efficient use of water.

Water sales also grew in July, with residents and businesses using 262.9 million kilolitres of billed, metered water – an increase of 6.88 million kilolitres compared to July 2024.

Additionally, the total volume of water supplied to the system rose slightly to 370 million kilolitres in July, up from 367 million kilolitres in the same month last year.

“These figures highlight the success of the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce water losses, improving efficiency, and delivering greater volumes of water to the community,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Overall, these positive results underscore the CoE’s commitment to water conservation and sustainable water management.

The city is reducing water losses through effective billing and revenue collection and by replacing ageing pipes that frequently burst.

Dysfunctional bulk and customer water meters are also replaced promptly to ensure water flows are measured accurately and losses can be identified.

“As demand rises with the warmer months ahead, the city calls on residents to continue using water responsibly and sparingly,” said Dlamini.
