Birchleigh North celebrates completion of long-awaited pedestrian bridge
The bridge will provide a safe crossing for school children and residents who previously risked their safety navigating the water stream during heavy rains.

Ward 91 councillor Desmond McKenzie and residents of Birchleigh North have welcomed the long-awaited completion of the Frikkie and Malvina Pedestrian Bridge.
The project, originally scheduled for completion in December 2024, faced delays but has now been finalised following sustained community pressure and advocacy.
“This bridge has been a long-standing priority for our community, featured in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) since 2017,” said McKenzie.

He explained that the bridge addresses a serious safety concern.
For years, school children and residents were forced to navigate the water stream, often risking their safety during heavy rains when the flow became unpredictable.
“The completion of this bridge will ensure secure passage, preventing accidents and injuries.

“We commend the efforts of all involved and look forward to its official opening.
“Our community’s persistence and advocacy have paid off, and we are thrilled to see this vital infrastructure finally taking shape,” McKenzie said.
