EMPD urges motorists to collect impounded vehicles or risk disposal
The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department has given motorists until January 27 to collect their impounded cars, warning that unclaimed vehicles may be sold to recover municipal costs.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) is urging motorists to collect their impounded vehicles between December 8 and January 27, warning that unclaimed vehicles may be disposed of once the deadline passes.
According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the vehicles were impounded for various offences committed across the metro.
Owners or authorised representatives must settle all outstanding fees, including impoundment, towing, storage, administrative and any related costs, before vehicles can be released.

Motorists are also required to provide proof of ownership, which includes vehicle registration documents, a valid identity document and, where applicable, authorisation letters for collectors.
The City cautioned that vehicles left uncollected beyond the stipulated period may be sold to recover municipal costs.
This process is enforced under the National Road Traffic Act 1996 (Act 93 of 1996) and Regulation 320 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2000, which allow municipalities to sell vehicles that remain unclaimed for more than 120 days.
