Thembisa security guards arrested for cable theft

The trio face charges of tampering with essential infrastructure.

EMPD Anti-Cable Theft Unit officers arrested three security guards contracted by the CoE for tampering with essential infrastructure in Thembisa on July 1.

EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said that as EMPD officers patrolled around Thembisa, they received a call from the control room informing them of three on-duty security personnel caught on CCTV cameras stealing electrical copper cables stored in the depot on Beans Street in Mangweni section.

“Members responded swiftly and caught red-handed three personnel from a private security company tasked to guard the municipal site were stealing a copper cable worth R20 000.

“They handcuffed the three, and the shift supervisor and the liable owner were summoned on-site,” Thepa said.

Thepa told The Express the trio face charges of tampering with essential infrastructure.

They were taken to the Rabasotho Police Station and will soon appear in the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court.
