Thembisa church takes stance against GBV

This event was a powerful reminder that addressing GBV required a collective effort and unwavering commitment.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church SA in Moriting Section, Thembisa, hosted a Women’s Month celebration and focused on denouncing gender-based violence (GBV) on August 20.

About 80 women and 40 men attended the event. Under the banner, I am trusted by God and I am a gorgeous woman, the church welcomed guest speakers, including Doctor Nontando Radebe, the church’s GBV co-ordinator.

The Tembisa Social Crime Prevention Unit’s Sergeant Asnath Makgupya, communication officer Sergeant Patricia Mgijima, GBV co-ordinator Sergeant Pitsi Makgatho, and Warrant Officer Madiba also attended.

Makgatho addressed the congregation, emphasising that GBV knew no boundaries of race, gender, age, or social status.

She urged those present to unite in the fight against this ‘second pandemic’ plaguing the nation.

“Justice alone cannot bring back our loved ones,” she said, “But reporting on behalf of fearful victims is far better than lamenting their deaths.”

To further support victims and offer a helping hand, Makgatho provided her contact details, assuring the congregation her office was always ready and welcoming.

She also highlighted the presence of the POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse) offices in the police station, staffed by social workers available throughout the day.

The event took a poignant turn when a candlelight ceremony was held in memory of those who had lost their lives to domestic violence.

This solemn moment was a stark reminder of the urgency and importance of addressing GBV in the community.

After the ceremony, attendees had one-on-one sessions with Radebe, who provided support and guidance.

The event ended with celebrating Women’s Month, highlighting their strength, resilience, and achievements.

Notably, men from the church took a stand against GBV by signing a pledge, committing themselves to be ambassadors of change and setting an example in their church and communities.
