This event served as a significant step towards mitigating the plight of victims, challenging societal norms, and encouraging an environment where everyone feels safe and respected.

Gender-based violence remains a pressing global issue affecting individuals irrespective of gender, age, or socioeconomic background.

This pervasive problem encompasses various forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse. It also includes harmful traditional practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation.

A group of about 100 men and women from different communities in Thembisa recognised the need for collective action.

Speaker after speaker denounced the use of violence against the most vulnerable people, including children and those living with disabilities.

Representatives from local NGOs, colleges, advocacy groups, law enforcement agencies, and concerned citizens convened at the Rabasotho Hall.

The event began with thought-provoking presentations highlighting the scale and impact of gender-based violence, both nationally and globally.

Leading experts in the field shared their experiences, bringing attention to the importance of dialogue, education, and awareness in challenging social norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination.

The focus of the dialogue was to facilitate understanding and empathy and encourage a broader conversation about the root causes of GBV and potential preventative strategies.

Panel discussions and interactive sessions provided opportunities to share personal stories, concerns, and suggestions, creating a safe space for survivors and allies to discuss the challenges they are facing.

These conversations advocated for gender equality, emphasising that GBV is not solely a ‘women’s issue’ but a human rights issue affecting the entire society.

The dialogue emphasised the significance of engaging men and boys as allies in the fight against gender-based violence.

Encouraging male participation seeks to challenge harmful notions of masculinity and inspire everyone to become active agents of change, fostering respectful relationships and promoting gender equality in all spheres of life.

They also unveiled awareness campaigns to address myths and misconceptions surrounding gender-based violence.

It aimed to debunk stereotypes, provide resources for support, and encourage the reporting of GBV incidents to law enforcement.

The collaborative approach also focused on dismantling the culture of victim-blaming, emphasising the importance of support services for survivors.

They highlighted local initiatives, such as improved access to counselling, legal aid, and safe spaces for survivors during the dialogue.

It underscored the need for robust law enforcement, adequate funding for support services, and community-driven campaigns to combat GBV effectively.

The event concluded with a collective commitment to change, as participants vowed to take the dialogue back to their respective communities and start conversations and awareness campaigns.

By involving various stakeholders and community members affected, the dialogue sought to develop sustainable solutions that address the underlying causes of GBV and promote inclusivity and safety for all.

As the community united against gender-based violence through dialogue and increased awareness, they hoped the momentum generated during this event would propel significant changes in societal attitudes and behaviours.
